ITU-T Seminar Kasane Telecommunications Union (ITU) Standardisation Seminar for Sub-Saharan Africa in Kasane from 24 - 26 July 2002. Mowana Safari Lodge, Kasane, Botswana

Telecommunications Operators and regulators from 14 sub-saharan countries were urged to standardise their operation in a bid to make their facilities accessible to majority of people.

The Excecutive Chairman of BTA Mr. C. M Lekaukau told participants at the International Telecommunications Union(ITU) Seminar in Kasane to be always keen to learn to avoid pitfalls that those who started before might have fallen into and standardise their networks.

The Executive Chairman said that emerging market in the global arena, telecommunication investors and suppliers from all corners of the world target Botswana as possible future investment destination and as such standardisation is much an issue for Africa as Universal access.

The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and the Member of Paliament for the Area (Maun/Chobe), Hon. Bahiti Temane said operators and regulators should harmonise new networks with old one for exchange of telecommunications traffic. He said that Standardisation is required in todays competive environment for intelligence purpose where it allows users to access general directions in technology development and similarly allowing them to access their own evolving technology and commercial strategies in comparison with their competitors. The Deputy speaker also sdaid that standardisation include market positioning where companies realise the need to link their marketing and research and development strategies to standardisation for introduction of product lines and services.

Dr. Houlin Zhao, Director of TSB/ITU urged cash strapped operators and regulators to improve the standardisation in a bid to make telecommunication accessible to the African multitudes. He said that among the instruments adopted by World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly -(WATS 2000), resolution 17: Telecommunication standardisation in relation to the interest of developing countries, is a very important document to guide ITU-T in co-operating with the developing countries in the international standardisation work.

Delegates were drawn from; Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, the Gambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
